The Fifth Annual Convention of Asian families, family offices, foundations, firms and financial institutions driving global impact agenda
The turn of the century has been marked with an accelerated priority on family succession issues in Asia. Over the next two decades, the many billionaires in Asia — with 85% of them being first-generation family business founders — will face the great challenges of passing their values, wealth and business to their next generations. China has now overtaken the U.S. to have the largest number of dollar billionaires with continuous tremendous wealth growth during this period galvanized by the new economy, particularly in the tech sector.
Driven by both the vast needs for family successions and strong policy push, more and more mega family foundations and charitable trusts are being created in Asia as a means for the ultra-rich to give back to the society. Many new ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) individuals and their families have the ambition to make an impact on the global stage. Their abundant financial resources, entrepreneurial drives, and hands-on approach point the way towards a new fashion of doing philanthropy – with style. The new generation of wealthy families in Asia wants to learn best practices in family foundation and philanthropy from other multi-generational families globally, so as to discover from peers and better steward their family wealth for greater purposes, beyond many generations.
At the same time, the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and impact investment movement have now become the mainstream in wealth and asset management, with a philosophy that seeks to generate more holistic positive returns in the environment, economy, and society. Governments, wealth funds, and prolific philanthropists are continuously emphasizing the importance of redefining how financial resources are put to good use: such as to improve education and healthcare services, to inclusive financing and climate adaptation. Impact investment generates a buzz among the next generations so that they can do something different and meaningful through their family offices, and make a statement that they are capable and responsible wealth stewards for their families and society.
Taking place in the financial capital of Singapore on December 13, 2020, Business & Philanthropy Forum 2021 convenes global visionaries, from high net-worth individuals and families to family office principals, institutional investors, corporate venture capitals, foundations and trusts, and policymakers who are actively exploring the synergies across wealth, investment, philanthropy, and purpose.
